Take forest, with a dual personality fruitful for fantasy. Both dangerous and protective, it harbours hermits and monsters, criminals and refugees alike, light and shadow are its essence. Shelter becomes concealment, and the forest’s semi-magical powers of transformation and regeneration challenge our very sense of self.

Extract from my article and set exercise on writing about forest commissioned for a volume of the Now Write! Series, published by Tarcher/Penguin (2014).
